Moving sections of music

• Nov 20, 2017 - 19:33

I'm trying to move sections of music around the piano score I'm currently working on. I find that if I insert a section in to a different location, palette items eg.hairpins and pedal markings, relating to the section which has been displaced by the inserted section remain in the same position, rather than moving with the displaced notation. Anyone any ideas how to get round this problem?

Are you selecting both the treble clef and the bass clef staves at the same time?

Hairpins move along with the copied part fine for me. As for pedal markings; when you copy and paste the pedal markings, it leaves one marking at the previous spot. That's weird. I just noticed that.

Anyway, You should be able to move them around without any problem. Are you using the latest Musescore version?

If you paste over existing music a couple of things are not replaced - Slurs and hairpins (e.g. crescendo "<" lines). If you don't want them in the destination measures you need to delete the existing measure contents first. If the hairpin extends to the end of the measure, deleting the contents of only that measure will not remove the hairpin, it must be selected and deleted (or delete the following measure also). This is also true of the swap with clipboard command which allows you to copy a section of music then paste it while copying the destination measures at the same time.

Hi All
Perhaps I should clarify what I am trying to achieve as I think I may have clouded the issue a bit when I indicated I was merely moving a section. What I am trying to do is copy an 8 bar passage and insert it at various points as an interlude between sections already composed. This will, of course, have the effect of displacing the existing bars so I suppose the various points you have all kindly made are all still valid.
Barbossa: Yes, I am attempting to move/insert both treble & bass clefs at the same time and I am using the latest version (2.1).
Mike320: Thanks for your helpful input. I don't if any of my recent comments would make any difference to the advice you've offered so far?

Pedal marks are hairpins. I don't play piano, so I didn't think about them.

@kol, since I wasn't sure what kind of moving you were doing I wasn't sure if pasting on top of existing music was an issue. Since you are pasting to empty measure I gave you too much info. Once thing to keep in mind is that if you do not select all of the notes a hairpin is attached to it will not be selected. So if your pedal mark spans two measures and copy only one measure, the pedal will not be selected regardless of the filter.

I suspect Barbossa meant to say he was cutting rather than copying when the pedal mark was left. This is for the same reason a crescendo will be left. They are both hairpins. It's a flaw (bug?) in MuseScore.
