Make the rests invisible
Select the rests, press "v" for visible/invisible.

Don't hold the ctrl key, just V
Alternatively, select them, open up the Inspector if it isn't open yet (F8) and choose "make invisible" there.
You can make the rests invisible. Select it and hit the 'V' key.
