Which version of MuseScore are you running? On which Operating System (Windows? Mac?)
When you go to View > Synthesizer, do you see a soundfont listed?
When you go to Preferences > I/O, what do you see ?

I'm using a mac and it's in the 2.1 version. For the synthesizer I have one thing under fluid, and for preference I see PortAudio selected
