New options for Style--General--Measure

• Sep 30, 2018 - 02:59

Thank you for your fine program.

I was adjusting the style preferences at "Style--General--Measure" and noticed that there was no option for "time signature right margin" for tweaking the spacing between the time signature and the first barline, for example. I wish there were.

I would also like to see a similar spacing option for the left repeat sign, when it appears at the beginning of a system or at the beginning of a song, so that it is not too close to the time signature. This could also be accomplished with a new option for "time signature right margin".

I would also like to adjust the distance automatically between a volta and the key signature, when it is the first measure of a system, so that the volta is never too far left and never able to blend in with a key signature of F# for example. This is helpful for amateur musicians who need to see the volta more clearly when their eyes drop down to the next line. In fact, at first glance the volta looks like an extra ledger line as part of the staff itself, and when the number inside the volta is so far left that it cannot be clearly seen, the volta looks even more like a part of the staff.

Currently the volta seems to ignore the "clef/key right margin" setting in this respect, while the notes, themselves, obey it. Of course, I could manually adjust the volta each time, but an automatic spacing would be nice, such as by means of forcing every volta to obey the "clef/key right margin" setting.

I find that better spacing translates to better legibility, especially for amateur musicians reading the scores.

Thank you for your hard work.

Re: "I would also like to adjust the distance automatically between a volta and the key signature, when it is the first measure of a system, so that the volta is never too far left and never able to blend in with a key signature of F# for example. " .....

are you aware that you can double click on the line and then select the left-most box and then move it out of conflict? The best method I have found for moving things is to select what I want to move is to use Ctrl and the direction arrows.

I find it helpful to use the Inspector, where you can set "Segment > Leading Space" or "Segment > Trailing Space" individually for elements like key signature and time signature.

I suggest you check out the "alpha" or any recent development build of 3.0 to see if the new options there suit your needs, and if not, post again with your findings. There is, for instance, now a "Time signature to barline distance" setting, but I don't see anything that would help with respect to voltas.

Gentlemen,

Forgive me for not responding sooner. I was keeping track of my posts rather well until recently.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Thank you for the work-arounds. In fact, making spot adjustments as you suggested, is good for the moment, but the changes are not saved to the "general style" settings, so I would have to remember to perform them again and again, each time I creatd a new score. The lead-space on the volta, or the spacing for the repeat sign, for example, can be adjusted horizontally in the Inspector, but the changes do not apply to future creations.

Of course, my main concern is to report these issues to whomever would be able to fix the bugs, not to ask for work-arounds, so I thought that this would be the place to report them, and I thought that the programmers would be the ones reading this. If there is a different place for reporting bugs or oversights like these, please let me know. (Meanwhile, thanks for the temporary work-arounds)

Style settings are per score. If you want to use the same style settings in multiple scores, you can either save the style file and load that into other scores, or save a template and create new scores from that, or even make the style file the default in Edit / Preferences / Score.

Programmers do see suggestions made here, but to have more permanent tracking of the issues, you should submit future suggestions to the issue tracker (see Support menu above).
