Musescore 3.0 Sound Crackling and Popping
When I play back a piece on a concert band template, the sound cracks a little and it does it on all instrument parts. I believe it does this with a large amount of instruments only because on chamber templates or solo instruments, it does not appear to happen. Musescore 2 plays it just fine, but it does not seem to be working as well with Musescore 3.0. It might just happen when most of the instruments are playing but when I solo them, they still have that crackling sound.

What version of MS 2 and what operating system and hardware?

Musescore 2.1 is the one that works fine with sound on larger scores. I am running on a Mac with 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 with 4GB of memory (1600 MHz DDR3).

I think you suffer the "Mac Stuttering problem" which came in with 2.2 and is not reproducible by the staff. I have {OS: macOS 10.14, Arch.: x86_64, MuseScore version (64-bit): 3.0.0.20137, revision: c1a5e4c} and my processor is faster than yours (2.3/i7), but 6 years old, and have been plagued by stuttering since before either Mojave or MS3 (but it came in with 2.2 if I recall). I have reason to suspect that processor speed is a key factor in this problem. It seems unique to Mac.

That makes sense. Thank you anyways. I'll probably just use MS 2.1 since it's easier for me to use anyways. Hopefully this might be fixed in future releases of MS 3.
yeah, I have that same problem, a real shame seeing as I moved all my pieces over to MS 3. Hoping this can be fixed in an update preferably very soon.

I too experience crackling on a recent version of MuseScore 3.1 on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015, details below).
The workaround for me has been to quit and restart MuseScore. I find that the problem develops if I have done almost anything else on my mac since starting MuseScore (especially anything having to do with audio, it seems). So I have developed the habit of quitting and restarting MS whenever I start work on a score. It doesn't seem to develop while I am working very often, but occasionally that happens.
So, that might be a workaround for others. But if anyone has a better workaround or a fix, that would be appreciated.

I'm experiencing the same problem on both my 2012 Macbook Pro running Mojave and my Macbook Air running Mojave. I've kept Musescore updated in hopes this problem might resolve but so far: no joy. I'll try your suggestion to reboot Mac and run Musescore first, and only Musescore.

I tried it just now - fresh reboot, no other apps open - and it seemed to have helped significantly. There are still very slight pops here and there in the louder sections, particularly when a lot of instruments are playing - I'm transcribing Mendelssohn's Hebride's Overture - but the really big nasty crackles seemed to have gone away.
Excellent suggestion!

I've had this problem intermittently since 3.0, including after acquiring a brand-new Mac with 16GB RAM. It has gotten somewhat better over time, but is not gone. It seems endemic; it is not reproducible enough that maintainers can do anything about it.
There used to be a terrific score of that very famous overture, but, like the people who post them, scores come and go, and it seems gone (or maybe search just didn't find it after 2 or 3 tries). Many people old enough to remember classic Warner Brothers animations will always associate it with a very zen Mynah bird ...
