Drag and Drop doesn't work
I absolutely cannot get a fermata (and most other choices on the palettes) to attach!
I highlight what I want and as I drag it with the mouse it follows me, but there's no way to get it placed. It just bounces back onto the palette. Can you help?

Press and hold Ctrl+Shift (Mac: Cmd+Shift), then drag the symbol onto the palette.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't work. I do have a Mac and I tried it using the command + shift, the Command solo, and just for good measure, Ctrl +Shift. :(

The Barline palette works for me though. :) I can just drag and drop that.
Click the element (note, rest or barline).
Double-click on the fermata in the palette.
OR
Click the element (note, rest or barline).
Click on the fermata in the palette.
Press [Enter].
Drag and drop isn’t as efficient as the other methods described here, but if you do wis to drag and drop, be sure to drop only when you are directly on top of the note and it is highlighted.

Ah yes! Thank you... 3 years later but helped me just now. There's a little green + symbol that pops up when it can be "let go" - at least on macOS and Musescore4.
