Compatability with All versions of Finale

• Apr 3, 2011 - 21:40

Hello all,
I would like the new update to Musescore to have better compatability with Finale. Particularily with all versions of it.

I need to be able to read and edit files done in the Finale program, but I want to continue using this Open Source program becuase it is free. Finale is very expensive for a college student.

You can use MusicXML to exchange scores between MuseScore and all versions of Finale. Which particular feature of music notation are you currently loosing in the process ?

MuseScores XML support continues to improve but is not perfect. Be sure to make note of things that don't transfer properly and report the specifics in these forums.

I am also a licensed Finale user (PrintMusic) but now I tend to export my Finale projects using XML into MS. For me there's usually a minimum of changes to make. I've been quite pleased with the results.

In the past I had problems printing out the score from either software.

It would show the Conductor's score in an unreadable format. The lines were so small that it looked like a black line across the page. I had to spend quite a long time (about a week) to get it where it looked right.

Even then, all of the staves would not show.

Sometimes the titles and other labels don't transfer well.

One thing that hasn't been pointed out is that the format that Finale saves to (.mus) is a proprietary format, which means it's owned by Finale and not available. That also means that MuseScore cannot natively open or save to Finale format. MusicXML is the best option right now, although it's not perfect.
