How can I shrink the notation?
Can I shrink the whole score as if I had put hard copy in a photocopier and reduced it by a specified %, but keep the same page width and have the bar carryover as with the less stretch command, i.e. more bars per stave. Can I do this without having to go through all the details in the style menus and probably make a right royal mess of the whole thing?

Use page formatting, "spatium", and read about that in the manual.
Go to Layout, Page Settings, under Scaling adjust the Space value. The preview in the dialog produces fairly accurate results. You likely want to play with stretch after that.
