Changing instruments on an imported midi file? 0.9.4 on Windows

• Feb 21, 2009 - 23:27

I set up a soundfont (General User GS) using the Edit->Preferences dialog. When I import a midi file with multiple instruments and play it back all the parts seem to be played using the honkytonk piano patch. I can't see any way to change the instruments.

One thing I tried was the Create->Instruments option. Even though there were already instruments, the 'edit' button was disabled until I added a new random instrument. Then I deleted the new instrument and the edit button remained enabled. Using the edit button I was able to set the midi program (although I had to look up the appropriate general midi instrument number since it didn't give a list, only numbers.) However changing one instrument's midi program immediately changed all the others to the same program. I tried playing the piece anyway and it still sounded like everything was honkytonk piano.

Will there be an option to edit stave/instrument properties under the Edit menu at some point? And can't import from midi preserve the instruments given in the midi file?

Comments

Probably future versions will include an option to change the instrument sound via Display > Mixer.

Right now a work-around is to add new instrument staves and copy the music to these new staves, which already have the sounds properly set up.
