True "dotted" lines

Yo, or insert informal greeting here:
When I switch from dashed to dotted for the line style of an ottava (this also applies to crescendos, etc.), it practically looks like a smaller version of a dashed line and not truly dotted in the sense of circles or like a staccato mark. Is there a way to achieve circular dotting? It's only a matter of taste, but I have certain sheets that utilize circular dotted lines and it seems appealing. I'm asking the question to make sure that it's not my system doing something funny or if I'm overlooking a parameter somewhere.
