Splitting the staff

• Aug 23, 2016 - 23:45

Greetings,

Could someone tell me if it is possible to start a score with a single staff (flute) and later to combine a few bars (in the same score) into a piano grand staff (with two lines)?

Once that's done, can the score (the same score) be brought back into a single staff?

I've a part to write out. Some numbers are written in a single staff, while others require a double staff to write the melody in concert pitch (on one line) and in the transposed key (right above the concert pitch line).

Can't figure out if there is a feature in the MuseScore software which would allow me to do that.

Thank you much for all your help!

I am not at all certain that I understand your problem, but I will venture a guess that you want your score to start with a single flute part, and later have a piano part appear for a certain number of measures before it disappears again.

If that is indeed the case, the solution for you is to use the 'Hide Empty Staves' tool, which you will find by clicking on Style>Score in the main menu, and checking the appropriate checkbox. If you want the first empty system in the score to be hidden as well, you will also need to uncheck Don't hide empty staves in first system. (That checkbox is greyed-out by default, but it will become active after you check 'Hide Empty Staves' just above it.)

Thank you. You did understand my predicament right. This method of hiding empty staff works only one way. I can make the empty lines (when only one staff is needed) disappear. However I can't figure out how to bring the double staff back without activating it for all of the lines.

As Jeetee mentions, using the 'hide empty staves' tool is something you do once all your music input is complete. I'm sorry I didn't make that clear in my earlier message. While you are actively working on your score, leave those boxes unchecked so that you can see all the staves and enter notes on them where needed. Once you are finished with the piece and are ready to export to PDF for printing, you can then go back and check the appropriate boxes to hide staves when they have no notes in them. Once you have done that, any staff without notes in it for a full system will disappear from your score, and the exported PDF version of the score will show that.
