F Mellophone and C#

• Oct 1, 2011 - 00:19

The C#2 note in the F Mellophone voice is out of tune with itself. There is an overtone produced by this note that is out of tune with the tone of the C#, and sounds very near to the sound of a dial tone on a telephone.

The sounds are prodiced by a third party soundfont timgm6mb.sf2. I'm not sure if it's appropriate the develoer of that soundfont directly or not to report problems, but in any case, the workaround is simply to install a different soundfont. See the playback section of the Handbook for more info.

Most soundfonts are crwated by sampling real instruments; the difference is in the size and quality of the samples. The one supplied with MuseSocre is very small (6MB) to make the installation small and fast. Just Google for "soundfonts" and you should find doznes more to choose from, including some that are 10 to 20 times larger (and hence, in some sense, 10-20 times more realistic). One in that category is FluidR3. There are others that are somewhere in between in size that can provide a good compromise. The size of the soundfont does affect the program performance too, I think, which cold be a reason not to simp,y go with the lrgest you can find.
