Open the Play Panel (Display>Play Panel) and choose Swing from the menu.

You can get better quality playback by using a different SoundFont at the possible expense of slowing everything down.

Some people recommend the FluidSynth SoundFont - I can't comment as I haven't used it.

Note: FluidSynth is the name of the software system used by MuseScore to *play* SoundFonts. Fuild, and more particularly FluidR3, is the name of one specific SoundFont that is referenced in the Handbook and I can verify sounds quite good for the most part. But it's still the case that MuseScore's handling of the playback in terms of interpretation of articulation, dynamics, etc is not as complete as, for instance, Finale's.

I would argue, though, with the characterization of the default SoundFont as "horrible". It's at least as good as the default MIDI sounds shipped with virtually any computer, and quite a bit better than most. But again, Finale (and Sibelius) both provide alternatives that are better still. I'd rank things about like this:

1. (worst by far) - the default MIDI sounds shipped on most computers before a couple of years ago
2. the default MIDI sounds shipped on most computers today
3. the default SoundFont shipped with MuseScore
4. The built-in sounds shipped with Finale or Sibelius
5. FluidR3
6. The Garritan sounds shipped with Finale
