Slurs and Hairpins crossing voltas and codas

• Nov 29, 2016 - 14:18

This has come up in multiple discussions most of which I found concerning slurs and ties and how to make a work around but this should apply to all hairpins and glissandi (if they aren't considered hairpins).

When someone enters a slur or glissando that crosses into a volta or beyond a "to Coda" it should automatically be continued in the next volta or the coda. That is, users should not be required to figure out how to make it look right by entering invisible items such as grace notes or other voices as is currently required. MS is supposed to be first of all a notation software and this is a very common notation that is not currently available to its users.

From a users point of view, the slur/hairpin/glissando in the non-continuous measure should simply terminate at the end of the first note of the non consecutive measure with the option of double clicking or right clicking it to modify its appearance as needed with hairpins such as decrescendos applying to its new span of notes. Slurs should start with an anchor point defaulting to the direction of the slur at the jump and should be able to independently change directions from the other side of the jump. This is very similar to what currently happens at a page break.

I have to say this would be nice. It is quite labor intensive to add the one sided slurs at both ends of the jump--though not difficult. And the situation is reasonably common.

On the other hand I could imagine that this might become quite difficult and complicated once one considers all possible use cases. If there is an awful lot of work required to achieve this it might still be smarter to use that time on other nice things, especially avoiding collisions between elements as broadly as possible or correcting those cases where beams have inadequate angles. These issues are even more common than the slur at the jump situation and also time consuming to fix manually.
