Playback: crackling instead of sound

• Apr 22, 2012 - 12:48

Whenever I try to use the playback function, I only hear distorted crackling on each note.
It worked ok till a few days after downloading the program. Then I probably hit a wrong button,
because it did not work anymore, even after some new downloads of the program.
My soundcard is ok. What could this be?

You don't say which OS you are using - would have been helpful.

If it's Windows - has there been a recent Windows Update?

If so you could have a newer version of the sound drivers which doesn't like MuseScore.

You should be able to rollback to the previous driver if tghis is the c ase.

Thanks.
I tried to get back to the factory settings, trying to follow the procedure in the link by Marc.
First problem: I am using an Apple keyboard, so there is no Windows key.
But I know the location of the program and also found the Bin.
I tried to add the space-F and was warned that this could make the file unusable.
Did it anyway, but the program did not start.
In the meantime I downloaded the version 1.1 again (I use Windows XP by the way),
but nothing changed. Strange thing is that the purple replay panel still has the settings that I last used,
including the tempo of a piece I wrote. How is this possible, as I deleted all musescore cookies...

I would check the reverb settings next.

You can find these on the Synthesiser page: (Display>Synthesiser)

My guess is that the Reverb Return is too high.

If you play a score with this window you can see whether you have the overall output too hot because you will see red in the Vol section. If it is just tinged with red that should be OK but if you can see a lot of red that means that the output signal is too hot and overloading your soundcard.

Bringing the overall output level with Vol will cure this, but if that reduces the volume too much move the reverb slider down. That will reduce the amount of Reverb returned to the mix - you can fiddle with that and the Reverb Send (on the MIxer page) for each instrument until the Reverb ends its feedback loop.

Thanks for the concern. I had high hopes when I read your advice.
So I tried what you suggested. Nothing changed yet though.
Strange thing is that my piece is in 6/8, the crackling is 6 a measure,
also when there are longer notes in it. And it even stops a little while at each double stripe,
when a new section begins.
I set reverb and chorus to zero, but nothing changed. I even set volume and pan to zero and nothing changed!

I had the same problem at the beginning. Then I disabled MIDI input (circular button on the left of the 'playback' tab and the noise disappeared. Until I restarted the program. Now the MIDI trick does not work. I guess there is something more as well.

I have the same problem. It went away when I disabled the midi function - then it came back again. If I export it as a mp3 file I get crackling, so I load it into Audacity, go to Effects, and use Click Removal. It removes a lot of noise and Audacity is a free program. Good luck.
