Whole Rest When Creating New Score

I'm new to Musescore. How do I create a new score that does not automatically contain the whole rests?

NOT FOUND: measure.png

Here is a visual of what I am trying to do. I want to change the F chord from quarter notes to half notes. The quarter rests, which I did not place there, is preventing me from changing the duration of the notes in the last chord. What I want to achieve is the following.... quarter rests, quarter note (G chord), half note (F chord).

Your link did not load.

As far as the whole rest, it is a place holder for anything you want to add to that measure.

When some note (or rest) is added by you, the rest will change to represent the amount of time left in the bar.

I can't speak to your claim that a rest is stopping you from changing durations except to say that there is some misunderstanding on your part. The rest will not interfere with placing notes in a bar.

However, if you are trying to add an improper number of "beats" in a bar you will not be able to.

We could help more if you were to attach the actual score, not a picture. If there is a bug that will be valuable information - if there is some part of MuseScore you are not understanding, the score would help us to point you in the right direction.

In my case, I got a lot of help by reading the handbook. Probably the answer is there.

(Just a guess, but you might check out "voices" in the handbook).

Best wishes.

There needs to be something in each measure, so MS defaults to a measure rest. As you enter each note, the rests diminish until you replace the last one with whatever you like. This should never cause a problem with entering music. It can actually be a good thing. If you are ready to move to the next measure, ctrl-right arrow moves you to the next measure jumping right over the rests that are already there for you. I use this often when entering short measures with notes only on beat 1 or 2. The rests are also a gauge you can use to see how much of the measure is left if you are entering an existing score with lots of 1/16th notes with similar notes in groups.

Thanks for the pic.

The last 2 quarter notes are only enough room to add 1 half note, so it is still not really clear to me what you are trying to achieve.

2 half notes in the bar will equal the whole bar, and so the first half note would have to occur on the first beat of the bar to allow room for the second. (Although I don't really think that is what you are trying to do:) )

I still find it difficult to understand what you are trying to accomplish.

We are more than happy to help you. You really need to read the handbook, especially note entry. When you put the note in the wrong spot in measure 3, while you were entering it all you had to do was press the backspace key to un-enter the notes you put in the wrong spot. Once you couldn't do that any more, click where you want the note/chord and enter it, starting with the duration (5 for a 1/4 note for the first chord) and continue from there. This really works a lot like a word processor, except you can't insert notes and have everything move for you.

The whole notes on beat 1 in mm 2 & 3 need to be put into voice 2. Search voices in the handbook to understand this. When you are ready to add the chords, search chord in the handbook. As long as you know the terminology of the music, the handbook is very useful. If you are not familiar with musical terms then downloading the PDF handbook and reading it will help you.

If you need more help or can't find it in the handbook feel free to ask, lots of us are willing to help or point you to the right spot in the handbook. The online handbook is more comprehensive than the PDF and is searchable. Just type a term in the "Search for help" box in the top right corner of this window.

In 3rd measure you enter your first notes on the 3rd time, surely a mistake, so , there is only 2 times for the notes, the 3rd and the 4th, so, 2 quarter notes. If you want to transform the last notes into a half note, there is no the place on this measure, only 1 time, MuseScore put the 2nd time of your half note, on the 1st time of the measure 4
