Strange symbol appears in score

A symbol which looks like a flag on a stick has appeared in a bar of a transcription I am doing. I am not aware of how it arrive and it won't go when I try to delete it. There is one at each end of the bar, being mirror images. Can anyone help me get rid of it please? Anna Wright.
