No 'Note' option in the palette..
I've just installed musescore 1.2 on a Mac running Snow Leopard. My palette doesn't include Notes, and the Drum portion is empty, too. I'll post a screen shot as soon as I figure out how to do it here.

Notes are on the menu (Notes -> Note Input) or you press 'N' to engage note entry mode.
Drums are empty by default in 1.2 (but I don't know why).
The drum palette is supposed to remain empty until you click a note or rest on a percussion staff - see the Handbook entry on drum notation. As for the note input palette, that can be toggled on and off via the Display menu, so be sure you have it enabled.

i get it now about the drum menu. but my main problem is that when i have the palette displayed, there's no actual 'notes' folder like the one i see on the website. when you display your palette, do you have a folder called 'notes'? it's kind of a pain not to have rest values to enter. or are there keyboard shorcuts for rest values like there are for notes? take a look at the screen shot i've attached...

There is no "palette" for notes - it a toolbar, and it's along the top of the screen - your screen shot shows the very right hand edge of it. Not sure where on the web site you're seeing something different.
Rests are entered the same way as notes. First you select the rhythmic value (use either the toolbar or the keyboard shortcut (numbers) to select duration, then place the note or rest by drag/drop, clicking, or by keyboard shortcut (letters for notes, 0 for rest).
You might want to read the handbook entry on note entry and/or watch the tutorial videos - they explain the process well, and it's extremely efficient (especially using the keyboard).

okay... i get it now. however, just to show you where i got the idea there should be a 'notes' dropdown in the palette, take a look at the first screenshot on the 'screenhots' link at the top right of this page. thanks for the explanation, and that makes sense.

That pic must be from a _very_ old version. I've been using MS since .963 and I've not seen it before.

The "Notes" palette in the screenshot is in fact the "Grace notes" one. The word "notes" has been replaced by "Grace notes" but the palette was always about grace notes. As stated by marc, you can get the note duration in the top toolbar. If you are a beginner, take a look to the first entries in the [[nodetitle:handbook]] . In particular, Create new score and Note entry .
