Final measure hanging out by itself

• Jun 19, 2012 - 16:30

I can't get the last line to stretch (shrink) to encompass 5 measures. I have 32 measure score in 4 measures per line, but is laid out as 33 measures with the last measure hanging out by itself since the first measure is a one beat pickup and the last measure is a 2 beat ending. I'd like to put that last hanging measure on the line above. I have searched the answers and so highlight/select the final 5 measures (4 on one line, then the hanging one below) but nothing happens when I either use the menu ('add less stretch') or the keyboard shortcut { . I can get selected measures above this to shrink (though not jump lines) but absolutely nothing happens when I try to shrink the last 2 lines (well, a line and 1 last measure). Is it because it is the last measure? My apologies if this has been answered. I looked! :)

Perhaps if you could attach the score we could see why.

Normally reducing stretch solves this unless the measures are crammed together too tightly.

If ever I lay out something as neatly as four-measures-per system I tend to count the pickup as Bar 0 followed by 1,2,3,4 on the first line. But, yes, attaching the score would help a lot.

yes, I designated the pickup as irregular so it doesn't 'count' it, but I still end up with the end hanging. wo't let me do 1,2,3,4 on the first line, but I don;t want it that way anyway. Am pulling out my son's notes from a trio score so he can read his part more easily - trying to make lines/measures match the book they are using - need the last line to have the 5 measures. but thanks :)

What about adding some extra measures to the end and then seeing if it will do what you want, then delete the extras?

The program should perform as advertized but I will mention that I used to drive myself nuts trying to make a copied score identically match the original in all aspects. I came to realize that it isn't important. Locations within the score get referred to by bar number, rehearsal letter or thing like "4 bars from the end", the double bar line or "the forte after the second ending", making the actual layout irrelevant.

Still, the program should do what you want unless there is something being overlooked.

so many thanks - I did try your suggestion - always learning more by trying - in the end, I tried the final suggestion of resetting the plug in Break every x measures to 5 measures for that line - phew! But so many thanks again!!

Are you perhaps trying to use the style option to force 4 measures per system? If so, that's your problem right there. It won't let you do what you've told it not to. Turn off that option and use the Break Every X Measures plugin, or just insert manual line breaks, to get the layout you want. Then you'll have the ability to force 5 measures on the last line if you like.

As others have said, attaching the score woild help. There is a set of controls right below where you type your posts that allows you to select a file for attachment and then to actually attach it (be sure to do that second step; it doesn't do any good to select the file but not attach it).

YES - that's it !!!!!! I wasn't using the style option but I had used the plug in Break Every 4 Measures option to set this up - so I just highlighted the final full line and used Break Every 5 Measures and Voila! Of course it wasn't that simple as the new measures (for some unknown reason) totally squished together ( all 5 measures in about 1/3 the space), but after 10 minutes of hair pulling I stumbled upon Edit General Style (probably because you had mentioned Style) - went to System, and then Fix Measure width - i didn't really have faith it would do anything (since no amount of stretch had helped), but there it was - perfect!!! Many, many thanks to you - and to everyone who responded - this is my first time using the software - am so appreciative of all the help and ideas - thank you !!!! thank you!!!

The last system is treated differently than others in terms of spacing for some reason. It either stretches the measures to fill the line (if they exceed the "last system fill threshold" in the style settings), or else it squeezes them all together tightly. If you want them to stretch to fill the whole line, you can simply reduce the last system fill threshold. if you just want them stretched out a little more than they are by default, the best I know to do that is append a horizontal frame and then size that to take up the rest of the page width.
