support / functionality for a midi-connected external keyboard on Windows

• May 12, 2009 - 16:03

I've been testing om Windows, rel. 0.9.4, with a external midi-keyboard (Casio), connected by a generic USB <-> MIDI connector (midi-in, midi-out, midi-thru).

It is not clear to me what functionality i should expect: i am looking for midi-input of notes (pitch and duration) through the external keyboard , and playback (midi-out) of the score (or selective by instrument?).

So far i am able to input notes from the keyboard, but only the pitch, not the duration ??
I can not figure out how to play the score on the external keyboard, except by exporting the score to a midi-file and play it through a different program (f.e. Realplayer).

The preferences-screen -> I/O-tab has me puzzled too.

It starts with a checkbox "use midi-out", but is doesn't seem to work ? The options are grayed out, and not configurable?

The portaudio checkbox has some options too, but i cannot make any sense of it...

Could someone give me a brief explanation of the current and future / planned functionality of the midi connections in MuseScore ??

Select the duration using the numbers on the computer keyboard and enter pitches using the MIDI keyboard.

I don't know if you've tried the input methods on other scorewriters such as Finale which try to interpret rhythm also. Every once in a while I try to use it but I always abandon it in frustration.

Many years ago i worked extensively inputting arrangements via MIDI. At the moment I don'rt have that capability.

I was able to play everything in veryeasily by manipulating the abilities of the Atari ST program I used, The Copyist ll.

I would play the required notes in and I was able to do a batch edit of the whole part by manipulating the recognized durations.. It was quite simple and effective.

I haven't used Finale, so can't comment on that, but they had a much less extensive program available, I don't remember it's name. I used it as well for MIDI input and it was easy to set durations while playing. The resultant notation was not very good looking, but it was useful for unpublished scores.

Regards.

Thanks for your answers. They confirm what i already suspected.

I am still puzzled about the options in the I/O-tab. Can someone tell me if the different checkboxes are functional, en what the functions are?
