Tied notes and crescendo

• Sep 4, 2012 - 22:41

I'm using the crescendo plugin and it works pretty well, except on tied notes. I've had two instances where this has been an issue. The first is when I needed a single note (say a whole note) that needs to crescendo from its beginning to it's end. I thought I'd break it up into tied eighth notes, tie them together, and use the plugin. The plugin did its job and set the velocity of each note in increasing increments. however when played it always plays all the notes at the velocity of the first note. In the second instance a note is held for several measures and is supposed to be a long gentle crescendo. Same result. Happens on every tied note, any instrument, any note, any piece.

Is this a bug or by design and if so is there a way around it?

A related issue, when playback is stared on any tied note other than the leading tied note, none of the tied notes are played. Only when playback is started at the first tied note or before are any of them played.

Using V 1.2 Rev 5470 in Win XP SP3 x86.

Thanks.

This is because the only way of controlling dynamics at present in MuseScore is by Velocity.

Velocity is applied as one of the parameters in a Note On Event, and so consequently a tied note will only have one velocity.

This is a major weakness in the current playback system, which I hope will be rectified in a future version of MuseScore.

The means to do this is already there in the synth engines, It just needs MuseScore to generate the appropriate Expression Controller messages.
