Background notes
Musescore won't let you put in background notes. For example: if you put a whole note on a "D" and a half note on an"f" it will take away the whole note even though you can do a background note in real life.

What you are calling is "background note" is more properly called a second voice. See Voices in the handbook for info on how to do this in MuseScore.
