glitch in adding unpitched persussion?

I am experiencing a glitch when adding un pitched percussion, or I am succeeding in toggling something that is not supposed to be toggled. When adding note, the input note ( N ) or the icon both, no longer function correctly, instead of getting my note bar at the bottom, the software is attempting to add a pitched note on the staff, and even the pitched note wont print or "stay" on the staff.

Am I toggling something or is this a real glitch?

I have succeeded in getting out of this by closing my score and or closing the program and restarting.
this has not always worked though.
