Note entry doesn't work in tab display mode

If I change a stave to display in tab mode, then note entry is largely disabled, I can:

* Hit the n key and enter note entry mode.
* Use the mouse to position add notes.
* Use the arrow keys to move added notes up and down.

But that's pretty time consuming, what I can't do, and would like to be able to is either:

* Hit the name of a note (say the "C" key) and have that appear on the tab in the next location - just as it works on a regular stave.
* Hit a number and have a note entered on that fret number - this is how most tab editors work.
