Tricky beam problem

• Nov 19, 2012 - 13:04

I'm typesetting a Strauss song (someone wants it transposed), and there are just three tricky beams in the piano left hand. The notes are as in bar 1 of the example, but the beam should be as in bar 2 (stem up on first low note, stems down on following high notes). Unfortunately, where there are note heads on both sides of the stem, Musescore just loses it. Bar 4 shows a simpler example, where everything works perfectly.

I had hope it would be possible to select stems up or down on individual notes: so if one of a beamed group is 'up' and the rest are 'default', then all go up, but if one is 'up' and another 'down', you get a both-sided beam. If not possible already, this is a feature request.

Meanwhile, is there any way to work around the problems in this case? I tried adjusting heads and things sideways, but most attempts made something else worse. I also notice there is a spacing problem -- the following sharp signs are too close.

Grateful for hints and suggestions. If anything is unclear, I can post a image scan of what I see, or just ask me to explain more clearly. Thanks!

I assume in the second measure, you dragged the left handle of the beam up to place it between the notes? That should have worked. It's a bug that it messed up the noteheads and accidentals. I just tried it in a recent build of 2.0 and the bug is still present. Would you care to submit an issue to the tracker so it can get fixed?

I was able to workaround it by selecting individual note heads and hitting shift-X to flip them back and forth to the other side of the stem. Nothing worked the way it should, but after a few random clicks, all ended up where it should - including the accidentals.
