Can't correctly notate E sharp

• Dec 8, 2012 - 02:22

I cannot correctly notate an E sharp. Moving the note up by semitone produces an F natural, which is expected behavior, but I cannot manually add a sharp using the accidentals menu. If I drag the sharp to the note, the note head turns red, and the sharp cannot be added.

Edit: I've noticed that no accidental are displaying in the score at all. (for instance, when writing in b minor, an A# plays as it should, but is not notated as an A#).

Create a shortcut. Go to Edit->Preferences->Shortcuts, scroll down to '# sharp', double-click on it and assign assign your # key (if you have one). I have also assigned the ' key to flat, the ; key to double-sharp and the = key to natural and find this useful.

If you're still having problems then please post the score for others to look at.

Yes, double clicking the palette accidental or assigning a shortcut are easier methods. But drag and drop *should* work. Are you sure you are not accidentally moving off the note after it turns red but before releasing?

Not sure I understand the comment about no accidentals displaying. Are you saying you entered an A# normally (eg, enter A then hit up arrow) but it is not displaying with a sharp?

I have very occasionally (like, maybe 4-5 over the past couple of years) seen MuseScore get into a weird state something like you describe. Closing the score and reopening, or shutting down MuseScore and restarting, seems to clear it up. If you find that doesn't help, post the score here and maybe someone will be able to figure out what's wrong.
