Syncopation and beaming issues

• Jun 24, 2013 - 22:55

I am unable to correctly beam certain syncopation rhythms, no matter what selection I make in the 'beam properties' pallet. Attached is an excerpt from a lead sheet I'm working on, measures 2 and 4 cannot be beamed so that each BEAT is beamed separately, either notes are beamed individually or combined with more than one beat, particularly when applied the the last beat of each of those measures . . . Trying to adjust the last beat of measure 2 even, in some cases, causes the beams to glitch and go all over the score! What am I missing? Thanks!

I saw the glitch you were talking about on beat 4 of measure 2. I occasionally run into this problem as well, and my workaround is to delete the notes and re-enter them, then fix any beaming issues. In this case, when I re-entered beat 4 of measure 2, it was auto-beamed to connect with beat 3. I then selected the downbeat of 4 and double-clicked the first option in the beam properties tab. Is this more what you had in mind?

Edit: Whoops, attached the wrong file the first time.

Yes, that's what I was trying to do . . . then, if I understand correctly , you have to enter the beam properties BEFORE finishing entering the notes? Enter the first note, then select the beam property, then enter the rest of the notes? I tried everything to correct the notes that were already there, and nothing would do it. In any event, I have now copied and pasted what you did into the score.... thanks so much for the help!

I actually do the opposite of what you said: I enter all the notes in a measure first and then fix the beams. I'm not sure how beaming is specifically programmed in Musescore, but I do know it gets screwy sometimes. Whenever it gets messed up, just delete your problem notes, re-enter them, and then fix the beams. Usually works for me.

I think you created the problem in your experimentation with the beam icons - it looks like a number of notes are set to inappropriate beam values. Just select all notes (right click one, select all similar) and double click the "A" (for automatic) icon to get back to how things should have been in the first place. Then you can breaks the beam where you want. You can actually do that all at once too ctrl-click the notes you wish to start a new beam group to select them all, then double click the "start of beam" icon. Or you can do it one at a time.

I usually correct beams as I go. I have defined keyboard shortcuts (via Edit / Preferences / Keyboard) for the "MIddle of beam" and "Start of beam" commands so I can enter them while I am still in note entry mode entering my notes.
