Tips for writing drums

Hi, I'm currently writing a pop piece, and I've got piano, bass, C trumpet, and drums. I've never even touched a drumset in my life, so I'm not really sure if there's any proper method to notating it. I already know how to get notes down for it from the palette, but a few extra tips would be handy.
Also, a specific question: how do you overlay percussion notes in a staff for drums? Like playing a bass and a snare at the same time?
