Bass drum appears as voice 1 with up stems?

• Oct 6, 2013 - 15:30

Hi,
I created a two bar drum pattern, but some of the bass drum notes in bar 2 appear with stems up (in voice 1). Note 1 is fine (with stem down). But on 8th notes 2& and 3&, I don't seem to be able to get the bass drum notes to register as stem down (in voice 2). Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

You don't say how you entered this, but I suspect your problem is that you have deleted rests from voice 2. Once these rests are deleted, you can't enter anything into the space they have vacated. To restore the rests, select the measure, then Edit / Voices / Exchange Voice 1-2 and then back again. Now you will be able to enter notes into voice 2 normally.

I assume the reason you deleted the rests is that they are colliding with notes, but that's not really the best way to handle this. First, you should enter the note on 1 as a quarter note, which would eliminate the need for the eighth rest on 1&. Then simply move the existing quarter rest on 2 down a couple of notches (double click, down arrow). If you really must make it disappear, mark it invisible; don't delete it. But musically, the rests serve a purpose, which is why published music generally show them except in very specific cases where it is acceptable to hide them.
