New Handbell Soundfont

• Dec 21, 2013 - 14:04

I'm interested in creating a new Soundfont for handbells. I'm not really happy with the sound from either the default soundfont or the downloadable one from the handbook. I have access to a nearly full set of bells and chimes that I could use.

I know that the common handbell symbols have been requested for version 2.0, I could make recordings of all those too (martellatto, mallets, thumb damp, etc.).

My problem is that I know nothing about audio capture or processing and don't have any equipment. Depending on the price, I'd be willing to acquire some basic recording equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Is anyone already working on this? I don't want to start down a road that's already being traveled. I searched but couldn't find any topics similar to this.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was initially looking at this microhpone , but I think the one you posted will work better. We start up rehearsals again at the end of this month, so I've got a little bit of time to figure it out.

My understanding so far is that I should record as many volumes (dynamics), as many note lengths, and as many styles (thumb damp, mallet, etc.) as possible, correct?

As far as building the soundfont goes, I'd like to try it myself at first just to see how far I can get. I will definitely let you know if I have questions along the way or if it gets to be too much. Thanks for your help!
