unwanted longas
When I add a half note into an empty measure I get slurred longas in the next 3-4 measures instead. No way to avoid or sidestep the problem

Sorry, when I add a longa into a measure, not a half note
If there are not enough beats in a measure then its break the note into smaller durations tied to together. Of course with an adequate time signature you wouldn't have that problem. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question.
