Mac Font Problem: Avenir Next Condensed

• Dec 27, 2017 - 18:08

I've been playing with styles, and wanted to try a font I have installed, called Avenir Next Condensed. I use it in various other applications quite happily. However, in MS it shows up with whitespace between the letters, as if they were new words. I wonder if some code is making an assumption about font glyph width, which is deliberately much narrower than normal in Condensed fonts?

(I have used Avenir Next in verse 1 and Avenir Next Condensed in verse 2. The same happens with trying it in stave text, so it's not just Lyrics.)

Generally speaking, space between characters is controlled by two things: the actual width of each glyph (which often includes space to either side) and so-called "kerning" info that specifies how to adjust that space between specific pairs of glyphs (adding more space between some pairs, removing some in other cases to allow them to overlap). Unfortunately, there are a bunch of different standards for how kerning info can be encoded into fonts, and not all programs support all methods on all OS's. You might need to find or create a different version of that font that has the kerning info recorded in a way MuseScore can use.
