Playback controls

I am using Musescore on a MacBook Air and have updated it to version 2.1. For the past six year, it has been working fine, but after I updated it, the playback controls are gray and I am unable to hear my composition. How can I fix this?

See #234811: No sound on Mac and Windows, I/O's PortAudio API drop down menu empty. It's a known issue with a small percentage of Mac's, in some cases apparently a cause is known, in other cases not. See the discussion in that thread to see if any of the suggestions help.
