Finger mode
You should introduce a finger mode. In this mode, we should use something easy to enter finger numbers. For instance, we could use numeric keys to add/insert/overwrite finger numbers already attached to notes or add to new notes. Currently, clicking on notes (which is far from easy) and then double clicking on a finger number is still cumbersome.

Meanwhile, though, be aware you don't need to click to select notes - you can use the cursor keys. By themselves to move left & right through the score, with Alt to move up & down, etc. Also Ctrl+Alt+Shift+cursor moves control from a fingering element to the note. And you can also use a shortcut to add the fingering, although you need to define that yourself in Edit / Preferences / Shortcuts. So in principle you can enter fingers without using the mouse, although it's still not as convenient as a fingering mode might be.

Thanks for the clues. They are already helpful. I did not understand what CTRL+SHIFT+ALT + Cursor does from your explanation. I tried the combination and found that I only select fingers, not notes which is also useful. And this led me to another question. Is there a shortcut so one can select a notehead? I very often end up with selecting stems instead.

Ctrl+Alt+Shift+cursor (left or right) is a command to browse your score element by element. Used mostly by blind users to "read" a score (each element is read aloud by the screenreader), but it can also be used in situations like this.
Not sure what you mean about only selecting fingers. With a fingering selected, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+right should select the associated note. Press it again selects the next note - whether in the same chord, another voice, or the next beat.

I apologise for language. I understand what you mean now.
I was wondering if we could restrict selection, e.g. only to headnotes, fingers, etc. If I just click on a note, a stem, a flag, or a headnote is selected depending on which is closest. Sometimes I want to select only headnotes even though my cursor is around stem.

Currently not. I did try implementing an improvement to the selection algorithm that would favor noteheads over stems etc but it didn't seem to generate much interest. Right now, best advice is to zoom in a little if you need to select by clicking rather than keyboard.
