How to separate stems

I have a measure that goes 1/8 rest, 1/8 note, 1/8 note, 1/8 rest. The stems are being automatically connected, but that crosses the beat, so I need to separate them. I've tried deleting it, but am unable to. There's a chance I'm completely overlooking some feature that would do this for me, but I can't find anything. Any help is appreciated!
