Corrupted file, wrong number of notes in a bar
Periodically, I get a measure or two that either loses notes or acquires extra notes. This sometime but not always results in a crash and/or a report that the file is corrupted. Usually it allows me to re-open the file anyhow and then by deleting the offending measure(s) I can recover the file. But something is going wrong somewhere and I'm feeling it's only a matter of time before I lose a chunk of work to a corrupt file.
It's not obvious what triggers this behaviour but it seems to be related to overwriting notes or copy-pasting measures over existing measures.

I believe the most common culprit in a score made from scratch is copying and pasting tuplets (mostly 6 or longer). These are the only corruptions I have personally experienced. There are other corruptions that occur when scores are imported from other formats. These corruptions vary from type to type.

Yup, now you come to mention it, it was triplets for sure that I was editing at the time, thanks for the tip.
It seems that triplets are quite troublesome to edit in the first place: the only way to change the value of a triplet seems to be to erase it and start again. Unless I'm missing something?

The only way to change a triplet to anything else is to delete it and start over. If you mean to change it from 3 8th notes to a 1/4 and and 8th, you should be able to do that. There are problems (bugs) with editing longer tuplets and changing their rhythm after they're entered.

Thanks. I was starting to think I was going crazy - the triplets just didn't want to do anything I was asking them to do...
