How to split a whole note rest into dotted quarter note rests (12/8 time)?

• Mar 2, 2018 - 18:38

I'm writing a jazz chart and I need to put chord symbols above the staff. Instead of each measure showing a whole rest, I'd like each measure to show 4 dotted quarter rests.

How to do this?

Thanks!

Select the measures, then Edit / Tools / Fill With Slashes.

BTW, to answer your original question - not that you really still want to do this - the way to fill a measure with dotted quarter rests is the same as the way to fill it with anything else - enter them one at a time, use copy and paste as necessary if you want the same thing over and over. There is also the "R" command to repeat a selection. So, enter four dotted quarter rests in one measure, select it, press "R" as many times as desired to copy that measure to subsequent measures. But again, not really something you need to be doing here, now that you've realized you can already enter multiple chord symbols per measure using ";", Space, or the other various shortcuts.

I usually click on the whole rest on the sheet music, then, click the half note and you'll notice the whole rest splits into two half rests on that measure, then click on the quarter note and one of the half rests becomes two quarter rests. Click on the quarter rests that you want as a dotted quarter rest on the sheet music, you'll see the quarter note box is highlighted, click on the box with a dot to make it a dotted half rest.
