The toolbar where you choose what rythm has dissapeared. I don't remember getting rid of it and don't know ow to get it back

If you have at least version 2.1 you can use the View->Toolbars menu and make it visible again. If you don't have at least version 2.1 you should upgrade.
You can right click in the toolbar area to bring up this dialog:
