Grace/acciatura/appoggiatura definitions

The use of these three terms sometimes seems random. I'm suggesting several glossary changes for clarity. The use of "short" and "long" in the grace note definition is misleading.
Acciaccatura: A quickly executed grace note preceding the main note that technically takes no value from the main note. Notated with a slash through the stem.
Appoggiatura: A grace note preceding or following the main note that takes value from the main note. It functions as a passing tone, escape tone, anticipation, or struck suspension.
Grace note: Grace notes appear as small notes in front of or after a normal-sized main note. They may or may not take value from the main (harmonic) note. See: Acciaccatura and appoggiatura.

Notes: I saw a post where the person wanted an acciaccatura but without the slash through. The slash can be made invisible. But I wonder if that would then subject it to the wrong interpretation!

Comments

Various grace notes have been interpreted or misinterpreted by many people over the years. It is sometimes difficult to put one type in a particular box and keep it there. As Shoichi suggested, you are more than welcome to update the handbook. It is a community project.
