Writing three-note chords with moving melody line

I am teaching my adult piano student to play three-note chords with her right hand, and would like to arrange a song for her with half notes in the alto and tenor voices, with the melody in quarter notes. However, when I try to do that, the program wants to change the entire chord to either quarter notes or half notes. What can I do to achieve my goal?
