Doubles and trebles

• Jun 3, 2018 - 15:31

Hi All, newby here,
I am trying to write a nocturne from John Field, I have the piano part and using muescore 2 I am writing the Melody line to play on my flute. I'm not sure of the number of the Nocturne but it's annotated "Cantabile assai lento".
At bar 18 there are the beginning of lots for dotted doubles and trebles, but when I put them into the music they join!, so I end up with a thumping big run with 2s and 3s written above it, also when bar 18 starts there is a quaver then a dotted double but as soon as I add the double it joins with the quaver. An example can be seen in the music I have uploaded in bar 51, this should be a series of doubles! What am I doing wrong?

Doubles and Triples do not mean anything in English when it comes to music. Doublets and triplets do, and that's what you have in your music. Perhaps you can take a picture of what you want it to look like and attach it here.

Hi Shoichi, yes I think so, but as I'm a rank beginner at this I'm not sure. I followed the instructions to create the doublets and triplets (should they start with a capital letter?) with a note or rest of the correct size to create the 2 or 3 I wanted but they just joined up, at the beginning of the bar is a quaver ok no problem, then a doublet created from a crotchet rest but as soon as it is created it joins with the original quaver forming a triplet with a 2 over the second two notes!! This throws the sequencing out for the rest of the bar, the time signature is 12/8 and all of sudden I seem to have too many notes!

Actually I see something there, they shouldn't be triplets and doublets they are just sequences of two and three dotted quavers, thus quaver two quavers barred together then three sets of three quavers barred together, that way the time signature is maintained, of course that raises the question, how do you create those notes?

Ok this response is for both you Shoichi and mike320, I've managed to copy the piece I'm trying to create for flute. The part I'm having difficulty with is Bar 19 to 21. I see what you have done Shoichi (but I don't know how you did it).
Sorry to be so dense.

As you have already discovered, there is no need to enter tuplets since the score is in 12/8 time and groups of 3 are normal. What you seem to have a problem with is the fist note that is not attached to the other notes. Select that not and, in the Beam Properties palette, double click the note that only has a flag on it. The pop up help on it says "No beam" in English when you hold your mouse over it.

I suspect the fingering numbers above the notes caused confusion. If you want the staccato dots, select the notes and press shift+s. You can select several notes at once.

Many thanks to Shoichi and mike320 thats all working now and I'm slowly getting through it, one morale sapper was the speed with which you produced your mogthe1stTest.mscz attachment Shoichi, maybe I should send the second page to you and get you to do all of it! joking.

Thanks again
