Inserting various rests
New to Musescore. In the handbook, it seems clear how to create a blank score, click on the note-add symbol and add notes of different values by clicking on the staff or using the virtual keyboard. What I'm having trouble finding is how to add rests of different values exactly where I want them.
For example, in my new score I have several measures that start with a 1/4 or 1/8 note rest, not a note. How do I insert that first. I tried clicking on the "rest" icon above my score, the box which shows 3 different kinds of rests in it, but then what? It's not allowing me to drag/drop or insert and 1/8 note rest prior to my first not that will appear in that measure. Please advise, thanks

Rests, just like notes, are entered left to right. If you've read the Handbook, you'll see that you select duration for rests just like you do for notes. First select the duration, then select the rest icon, then click - or, much more efficiently, select the rest then press 0. Drag and drop is never used to enter notes or rests.

I've attached 2 measures from my score to illustrate:
The 2nd measure has seven 1/8 notes in it. It needs a 1/8-note rest at the beginning of the measure, because the playing of the riff in that measure doesn't start on the beat, but rather, on the 1-and.
Based on the instructions in the manual, I first enter note mode. Then I:
1. Select a duration using the toolbar
2. Click the rest button icon on the toolbar
3. Click in your score to enter a rest at that location (or enter "0")
I am trying to click right before the first note, but the cursor will not line up between the measure line and the first note, it keeps landing on the first note itself. The result is that doesn't simply enter an 1/8 note rest before the first note, but rather, delete's that first note and replaces it with the rest. I need the rest to appear before the first note, not replace it (which of course would still result in only seven 1/8 beats in the measure.)

As I said, you need to enter notes and rests left to right. Unfortunately, you neglected to enter the first rest, so it's already too late to follow those particular instructions. Instead, you need to learn how to edit the notes you have already entered, to insert more notes or rests in front of the ones you have already entered, See:

However, I'm a bit concerned that in your example, the third measure appears to show the incorrect number of beats. It's hard to know what's going n from only a picture - attaching the actual score is better - but it appears your score may have somehow become corrupt. Either that or maybe there is an invisible eighth rest at the end. Or this measure might have been set to have an actual duration of 7/8. If you attach your score, we can understand better what might be going on and assist better.

This is the normal behavior. To insert a rest at the beginning of a measure without replacing the notes, select the notes (see: https://musescore.org/en/handbook/selection-modes#range-select), cut the range (ctrl+x), insert the 1/8 rest and paste the range of notes on the position behind this rest(ctrl+v).
From time to time you'll find discussions about advantages and disadvantages of this behavior inside the MuseScore forum;-).

Thanks Marc & Kuwitt.
I followed all the instructions you both linked me to - select all notes in that measure, copy/cut, enter the missing rest, escape Note mode, locate my cursor after the rest and Paste - and yes it worked. Unfortunately, I find this method of simply entering a missing rest at the beginning of a measure to be arcane and tedious - especially since the program should have recognized the measure was not complete with only seven 1/8th notes in it (no Marc it wasn't a 7/8 measure, no "Invisible" 1/8 rest, and I doubt the file was corrupt as I had just started the score and only entered 4 measures so far.) So for me, I feel inclined to seek out other scoring programs that work more intuitively - the pros and cons of this approach kuwitt said were discussed in the forum.

I understand it can seem frustrating at first, but realize, once you realize the importance of entering things left to right, you stop making that sort of mistake, so you don't find yourself needing to do that sort of inserting very often. So it doesn't end up being tedious at all in practice. And since no program can possibly read your mind as to how many notes you will want moved, even programs that do try to guess and automatically fix things up end up guessing wrong and creating even more mess to clean up afterwards - it's actually more tedious in my experience with programs that try to do this.
As for the apparently corrupt measure, again, it's tough to tell from just a picture. If you'd like further assistance, it would really would be advisable to attach the score itself.
