How do I switch playback from an "open" to "muted" trumpet?
Can I switch trumpet from an "open" to a "Mute" playback sound within the same staff, or do I have to enter them as 2 separate instruments. Also, are there any built-in trumpet mute sounds (Cup, Straight, etc.?)

For playback, open the Mixer and scroll through your loaded soundfonts for a muted trumpet sound.
General MIDI defines only a single "muted trumpet" sound, so standard soundfonts include just one (typically harmon I guess). You can download and install more specialized soundfonts for other mutes, as described in the Handbook under "Soundfonts".
