Hearing the Fretboard

Is there a way to hear the fretboard played, or easily get MuseScore to generate the notes on the staff from the Fretboard so that it can be heard? I want to write songs using simple guitar chord progressions, and it would be slow to have to enter every note one at a time. If this cannot be done currently, could it be done with a Plugin? If no Plugin exists, I am a programmer and could possibly write my own.
