Time Signature palette not editable.

• Jul 16, 2018 - 19:03

I'm trying to write a piece in 7/4 time. I set the score up with that when I created the new doc, but then I tried to make the first few measures common time. The entire score changed. Fine. But now I'm trying to put the 7/4 back, and I can't do it.

I created a custom workspace (which was infuriatingly non-obvious), I have edited the Master Palette.I have told MuseScore that I want my time signature palette editable. It doesn't do a damn bit of good. My time signature palette does not change. I have quit and restarted the program. I have changed back to Basic then back to my custom workspace. I have created a new score. NOTHING has put my time signature in that stupid palette.

I see.

I was misled by the terminology and a lack of documentation.

It's not so much a "Master Palette" as a repository or supply palette. It does not have mastery over other palettes. It just holds raw materials that can be used to customize the working palettes in different workspaces.

Neither the documentation nor any of the forum answers thought to mention that I would have to drag my new signature from the "master" palette window into the functional palette before anything would happen. This is kind of an important detail.

Ah. There IS an adequate explanation in the manual under "time signatures." There is NOT an adequate explanation under "Palettes and Workspaces."

"Symbols from the Master palette can also be added to a custom palette." I believe this should read "Symbols from the Master palette can also be added to a custom palette by dragging them from the Master Palette window onto the custom palette." It does follow a sentence that says you can grab elements from a score by using Ctrl/Cmd-click to drag them. Proximity this sentence was (obviously) not adequate to make the process clear, especially since the master palette doesn't require using the Ctrl/Cmd key.

The handbook is a community project. You are welcomed to modify it so it will be clearer to others users. Perhaps a simple note in the correct spot that says, "To add a time signature see xxx" or something to that effect. If you don't do it right, others will check it out and fix it.

Thanks, but I'm not done yet.

Or maybe I am. {furrowed brow}

I made a bunch of changes, then lost the entire set mysteriously. The window I'd been working in vanished. Probably user error. So I started over, and made a point of saving the changes before I got too far. But now I can't save the rest of the edits; the site's refusing to allow further changes. {mutter mutter}
