Can't play joint staves separately

• Jul 24, 2018 - 00:43

In some of my pieces, I have vocal parts with two staves. For example, the soprano part has two staves but they are both labeled as part of the soprano "instrument." Because of this, when I go to play the soprano part, it plays both staves at the same time. However, I need it to play them separately. When I go to the mixer, I can only silence both soprano parts as a whole, how to I separate the two lines so I am able to silence them and play one staff at a time?

It sounds as though the piece has two staves on the same instrument. To verify this, open the Instruments dialog (Press I). Look at the Soprano and you will probably see Soprano then immediately below it staff 1 followed by staff 2. If this is the case, you need to add another soprano to the instruments. Find it on the left and use the add button in the middle of the dialog. Use the arrow buttons below the add button to move the new Soprano below the existing one if there are other instruments. Click OK.

You will now see your score has a new Soprano part. Select the entire second Soprano staff (select the first measure and press ctrl+shift+end), copy it, click the first measure in the new staff and paste it there.

You can now go back into the instruments, select staff 2 under the soprano and use the remove button in the middle of the dialog. Click OK and you will now have two separate soprano parts that can be controlled in the mixer. There are other ways to do this, but in my opinion are no easier in the long run. This allows you to use the mute and solo buttons in the mixer.
