Most likely, you are accidentally double clicking the note. When it is in the state, pressing a number to change the duration or letter a-g to change the pitch will not work. If I'm wrong undo the change and add a screen shot when this happens.

I had to replace my mouse.

I have had to do that before for the same reason.
