Ctrl "F" should close the find window if it is open and ......

At the moment there is no response to the command when the find window is open.

Also "z" should close that palette when it is open. :)

I agree Ctrl+F is unnecessarily tricky, it's easy to miss the find window, and it doesn't close at times when I kind of expect it to (like after clicking in the score). Not sure what the best way to improve this is, though.

But "Z" does close the symbols palette if it is open, at least it does normally. There might be some specific sequence of operations where it doesn't work as expected, so if you have a specific set of steps in mind, let us know. Do be sure you're testing with a recent version, I do recall some older ones having bugs there.

Hmm, that/s 2.3.2, most recent version, same as I am using. Yet it works fine for me. Are you saying it never works for you, or maybe it only doesn't work after some specific sequence of steps? I've tried a variety of things - clicking in the palette, double-clicking in the palette, dragging to the score, clicking in the score, etc - and I can't get it to fail. Try the following:

1) start MuseScore
2) press "Z" to display symbols palette
3) press "Z" again

Result, for me, is it goes away. So far the only thing I've found I can do between steps 2 & 3 that temporarily gets in the way is clicking one of the labels at left of the palette to switch to, say the time signature section of the master palette (or pressing Shift+T, which does the same). In that case, pressing "Z" first returns me to the Symbols section, then pressing it again closes the window. All this seems exactly how I'd want it.
