Mid-Staff Percussion Changes

• Nov 4, 2018 - 15:34

Hello. I'm working on a concert band arrangement. Throughout my song, I have written a percussion part. However, the percussion part only works with unpitched percussion. "This is fine", I thought, "I could just do a mid-staff instrument change." However, when I tried to do a mid-staff instrument change to xylophone or flexatone from a percussion part, I could no longer place a note. I think this is because I used the 'percussion' instrument. Is there any way I could fix this?

There is no way on the same staff to have both pitched and unpitched percussion. You must put these on different staves. If you put them one immediately above the other you can give the appearance of them being on the same staff.

Enter all of the notes on both staves.
In the menu Style->General... check Hide empty staves and uncheck Don't hide empty staves... immediately below it. You will then have only the necessary staves showing.
If you end up with a system that contains both instrument (two staves), then in each staff, select the first measure where the staff change happens and insert a horizontal frame. MuseScore will put both staves on the same line when you do this. To remove the space that is created by the frame, select the frame and and use the inspector to set the width to 0.0.

You will be able to change staff types mid system in version 3, so this will be much easier.
