Special characters - "greyed-out"

Hi peoples,
when applied to lyrics text the Special characters / Musical Symbols (e.g. "Tick for breath) appear on screen as greyed-out and are not transfered to a score print-out (even as greyed-out!)...

Please, - am I perhaps omitting to tick (sic) a buried check-box somewhere?
